April 16th, 2024 – Unceded & Undefeated with Alana Cook

A professional MMA fighter, a proud Métis woman, and a budding scholar in the field of Indigenous Health and Wellness, Alana has spent the last decade of her life embracing the beauty of active movement through martial arts, and re-discovering the incredible ways that Indigenous knowledge and Land-based learning can heal us from the intergenerational impacts of colonial trauma and forced assimilation. This “matriarch-in-training” will share her story of finding balance through sport, healing, and cultural self-discovery through the lens of an urban Indigenous woman: this Land remains Unceded and our People remain Undefeated!

Message from Alana Cook:
“Tansi kiyawow,

Thank you so much for registering for our first EVER online “Walking Like Warriors: Self-Defence” and “Unceded & Undefeated” webinar sessions with the UBC Learning Circle! This was such a positive experience, and I’m grateful we got the opportunity to show you all some practical techniques for preventing, managing, and avoiding conflict. It was thrilling to see people joining in from so many locations, and learning how to ‘walk like a warrior’ with us!

If you are interested in bringing the “Walking Like Warriors: Self-Defense” program to your community, please e-mail us at walkinglikewarriors@gmail.com for more information. In addition to our self-defense seminars, we can also provide martial arts classes such as boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu for all levels. To read testimonials and see photos from our past workshops, please feel free to check out our website www.walkinglikewarriors.com
Remember: whether you are Indigenous or non-Indigenous, we got you! We are happy to work with all genders, all ages, and all fitness levels. No matter where you are (whether you’re urban, suburban, or on-reserve) no area is too remote for us. Self-defence is a human right, and one your community deserves!
Maarsii,
Alana Cook
