We will be LIVE from Vij’s Kitchen at UBC!
The UBC Learning Circle invites you to participate in our first cooking webinar/videoconference of the season. This session is part of a series presented by health professionals from the First Nations Health Authority about the relationship between healthy eating and wellness throughout the life course.
Join Registered Dietitian Gerry Kasten (FNHA) who will be the sous chef, and Divina Ridley of UBCLC, as the chef as they explore some savory recipes from traditional First Nations seasonal foods. Gerry will be cooking and testing the palatableness of the recipes while sharing health food tips about the foods and activities that will keep your family fit and healthy.
Gerry will also be discussing the diet of kids – “How much?” and “What kinds of foods are best?”
This promises to be an eye-opening and tasty session about the basics of healthy eating! All are welcome to attend and participate in this FREE live videoconference and computer webinar session.
Learning Objectives At the end of the session participants will be able to:
- Prepare the recipes included as demonstrations
- Identify the four food groups in Canada’s Food Guide
- Identify the key qualitative concepts for choosing foods from the four food groups
- Identify alternative foods that can be used to meet nutrient needs when one or more of the four food groups are being avoided
- Relate the broad concepts underlying the Glycemic Index
About the Presenter:
Gerry Kasten has worked with food all of his life. He was born into a farming family and still helps his brother bring in the harvest each year. He has received an Honours Diploma in Commercial Cooking, and Bachelors & Masters degrees in Nutrition. He has worked in Public Health in British Columbia for the past twenty-two years and is also a Sessional Instructor in UBC’s Dietetics program. He is currently the co-chair of Health Canada’s Infant Feeding Expert Advisory Group. He wants to live in a world where people celebrate food, sharing it with those they love, taking its pleasure without restraint because its flavour saturates their most sensuous appetites.
