You are invited to join the UBC Aboriginal Youth Learning Circle on January 10, 2013 from 1 to 3 p.m. for an exciting and interactive online presentation about the Aboriginal Play it Forward Sports Foundation initiative! Presenting will be Rob Cowie, Resource Teacher Coquitlam Aboriginal Education, along with students Morgan Anson and Beau Laslo. Together, they’ve founded an organization whose mission is to raise sports equipment for school aged children in Aboriginal communities across Canada.

The program started when Morgan was tasked with finding a non-profit organization that would allow her and fellow student and co-founder Kayla Daly to volunteer their time for a two-day period and report back on how their contribution impacted the organization and community. It was a challenge to find an organization because of their age, and they offered their services to a number of homeless and animal shelters in the Coquitlam area but were refused because they didn’t meet the minimum age requirement of 16.
The answer was for Morgan and Kayla to start their own Aboriginal Play It Forward Sports Foundation and used social media to get the word out. Because she is of Aboriginal decent, Morgan went to her teacher and Aboriginal school counselor and asked special permission to extend her project outside of the Coquitlam area. They identified the Nitinaht Hawks team in a First Nations community on Vancouver Island, BC as a place that could benefit from their fundraising efforts. The Aboriginal Play it Forward Sports Foundation is asking other school-aged youth across Canada to help raise and deliver sports equipment to as many Aboriginal communities in need as they can.

Morgan Anson attends Summit Middle School in Coquitlam, BC and is of Aboriginal heritage. Morgan is a co-founder of the Aboriginal Play it Forward Sports Foundation.
Beau Laslo is a Grade 8 student at Moody Middle School. He is a member of Coquitlam’s Aboriginal ME2WE leadership team, which assisted the Aboriginal Play It Forward Sports Foundation to collect sports equipment for Aboriginal communities.
Rob Cowie is the Coordinator for the Aboriginal ME2WE leadership program.
