We are excited to welcome you to our second presentation on traditional medicines! In our last session which was held in December, we learned about the plants you can collect and gather in the great outdoors of BC.
In this session we are joined by two Naturopathic students, Jessica Hueser and Elli Reilander, who are both currently attending third year at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine.
Elli joins us live in Vij’s Kitchen on UBC campus , and Jessica will join us via webinar. In order to instruct us in the preserving and storing techniques for medicines that can be used as teas or made into salves, they will advise us on which plants and herbs to use, and how.
During their presentation, Elli and Jessica will answer questions on natural medicines and will share which plants to use and how to dry the herbs and plants as medicines. They will also demonstrate the use of fresh herbs and plants collected for making teas. As well, they will instruct us in the process of turning medicines (dry or fresh) into salves.
Highlights that will be covered in this presentation:
- Which plants and herbs to pick: Why and when
- Drying and storing picked medicines
- Preparing medicines for tea
- Infusing medicines in oil
- How to change infusion to salve
- Going over shelf-life of teas and salves
All are welcome to attend and participate in this FREE live videoconference and computer webinar session.
About the Presenters:
Elli Reilander has always had a connection with nature. Growing up surrounded by the Salish Sea and in the Coastal Temperate Rainforest, it was no surprise that she enrolled in natural sciences at the University of Victoria. During that time Elli worked as an educator with several organizations including, Seaquaria In Schools, SeaChange Marine Conservation Society, and onboard BCFerries as a Coastal Naturalist. After completing a Bachelor of Science degree she went on to work as a Senior Park Naturalist in Goldstream and Rathtrevor Provincial Parks. This was where she became fascinated by the rich history and diversity of the traditional and natural medicines that surrounded us. Elli is currently in her 3rd year at Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine and is passionate about bringing together her love of nature, medicine, and education.
Jessica Hueser (Cree) is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, from Northern Saskatchewan. Her journey in naturopathic medicine began after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Saskatchewan. She is an active part of her community volunteering and participating in Pow Wows, soccer, and Culturally Relevant Urban Wellness (CRUW). She continuously finds ways to practice and share knowledge from traditional Aboriginal cultural and medicinal practices. Jessica is currently in her 3rd year at Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine.
