Join us for a discussion with Tracey Mager, Carolyn Gotay and Michelle Reid on Breast Cancer and prevention in Aboriginal Women. Topics they will be discussing include:
- Modifiable risk factors associated with breast cancer (e.g. alcohol, exercise, tobacco, HRT, weight, shift work, nutrition)
- Non-modifiable (age, gender, birth weight,breast density) risk factors associated with breast cancer
Assessments: You can use four tools that you complete online and enter on the intake form (BMI, waist hip ratio,Gail and Harvard Scores),we can estimate your risk of developing breast cancer,as well as how you can lower your individual risk of breast cancer. We will be discussing what each of these risk factors mean in relation to your individual risk. After the session we ask that you go online again to complete the post questionnaire. In addition, each participant will receive a Lifestyle report card outlining their risk and how they can lower their risk.

- Debunking the myths of breast cancer
- Understanding the genetics of breast cancer
- Understanding non-modifiable risk factors
- Understanding modifiable risk factors
- Using tools and lifestyle changes to lower the risks

About The Presenters:
Tracey Mager (MS.C.), is the Lifestyle Counsellor for the Breast Cancer Prevention and Risk Reduction Clinic at BC Women’s Hospital. After receiving degrees in psychology, and a MS.C. in Kinesiology Tracey completed her dietetics training at the University of British Columbia in 2002. As a passionate health advocate Tracey has counselled hundreds of clients and focuses her work toward disease prevention.
Carolyn Gotay (PhD, FCAHS) is a Professor and the Canadian Cancer Society Chair in Cancer Primary Prevention at the University of British Columbia. She also holds an appointment at the BC Cancer Agency. Dr. Gotay received her PhD in psychology from the University of Maryland, and she came to UBC in 2008 after positions at Gettysburg College, the University of Calgary, the (US) National Cancer Institute, and the University of Hawaii.Her long career in cancer prevention and control research includes leadership experience in academia and in the community. She has published more than 175 manuscripts and has received national and international support for her research.
Michelle Reid is the Research Coordinator for the Cancer Prevention Centre. She graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2011 with a Master of Public Health and has since worked on provincial prevention and health promotion projects, with a focus on cancer prevention, sexuality and women’s health. She is also a member of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation.
