Join this presentation and discussion session to hear from two medical students who volunteer with Healthy Families BC, one of the Aboriginal Youth Interns at the Ministry of Health, and Grand Chief Doug Kelly, Chair, First Nations Health Council, who has made some significant life changes in the area of healthy living and being active. This session also features special guest Robynne Edgar, Manager, Healthy Living Activities, Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council.
From the why, to the how, with stories and resources, this group will motivate the audience to make some changes, set goals and get their community up and moving in the direction of active, healthy and happy! Be prepared to participate with questions, examples, tips and tales of your own experiences around physical activity in an aboriginal community.

About the Presenters
Grand Chief Doug Kelly is a leader of the Sto:lo Tribal Council, and Chair of the First Nations Health Council.
With more than twenty-eight years of experience in leadership roles for Aboriginal communities, Grand Chief Kelly has an extensive leadership background including: 8 years as Elected Chief of the Soowahlie Indian Band; 6 years as a self-employed Community Development Consultant;13 years in senior management positions including Executive Director, First Nations Chiefs’ Health Committee; Executive Director, Health and Social Development for Sto:lo Nation; Operations Manager for the Sto:lo Tribal Council; and former Commissioner with the BC Treaty Commission.

Malisa Fox is originally from Kaslo British Columbia, with Curve Lake First Nation Ojibway and British ancestry. She is currently working at the Aboriginal Health Directorate at the Ministry of Health in Victoria, BC as an Aboriginal Youth Intern. She is passionate about sports and outdoor activities and excited to be leading Aboriginal Run/Walk running groups within the Ministry. She feels grateful to be living and working as a guest on Coast Salish Territory for the past four years.
Terry Chu and Mary Shen are second year medical students at UBC, currently enrolled in the Doctors, Patients and Society course, which requires volunteering with an agency, in this case, the Healthy Families BC initiative with the Ministry of Health.
Mary is interested in healthy living, learning Spanish, and eating good food. She was born in Shanghai, enjoys creating music and spending time with family and friends.
Terry was born in Taiwan, and enjoys running, playing hockey and spending time with family. He has studied biopsychology, and is interested in healthy eating, mental health and addictions medicine.
Robynne Edgar has worked in the area of Aboriginal health for over 8 years and is a firm believer that physical activity is the key to obtaining balance and strong mental and physical health. She learned at an early age how sport contributes to positive self esteem and is ecstatic to be part of the Partner Council’s team. Her most notable sporting accomplishment was competing at both the national and international levels in professional beach volleyball for 10 years where she achieved two National titles.
With a passion for learning about the traditional and current uses for Native plants, Robynne can often be found in the mountains picking mushrooms or berries, or near the ocean fishing or crabbing. Her greatest joy is her family and raising her two sons with her husband. Robynne is extremely proud of her Cree heritage on her Father’s side and Japanese heritage on her mother’s side and lives by the motto that “It’s never too late to start anything!!”
