Education is a path to a better future.  Choosing where to go to obtain a higher education can be a difficult and confusing. There are so many options and opportunities available.  This session can help you decide which college, institute or university program is right for you and how you can plan for your future academic success.  We will talk about life inside and outside of the classroom, how to develop an academic plan, as well as a spending plan that will help you achieve your educational goals. Come out and learn from the experts on how to make a successful transition to post-secondary studies!

About the Presenters

Melody Markle is Algonquin from Long Point (Winneway) First Nation in Quebec. She comes from the Bear clan and has many ties to her Anishnaabe family.  Melody recently joined UBC as the Aboriginal Student Recruiter – Advisor in Enrolment Services, serving both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.  She is a graduate of the  Bachelor of Social Work program at Ryerson University in Toronto, where she also worked as the Aboriginal Admissions and Liaison Officer for a number of years.

 Nadine Alvarado Hensley is a member of the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe of Southern California.  Nadine is an Enrolment Services Professional (ESP) at UBC and has served in this role for over a year.  She has over thirteen years of student affairs experience in admissions, recruitment, financial assistance and working with first generation college students to obtain their education goals. Nadine has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Higher Education.

Graeme Joseph is Gitxsan from northwestern British Columbia.  He   is a member of the House of Guxsan, part of the Fireweed Clan or Gisgaast.  Graeme has been working at UBC for twelve years as an advisor and coordinator in Aboriginal student services. He is also an alumni of the university and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology.
