Join us at the UBC Youth Circle as Alissa Derrick shares her experience of a difficult past and how she has overcome numerous challenges to become a badminton champion and all-round role model for Indigenous youth!
Alissa Derrick is a First Nations student at in her third year of Criminology and First Nations studies at Simon Fraser University. She is interested in building relationships with urban Aboriginal peoples with the greater purpose of creating support and opportunities to enhance their personal and cultural goals. Alissa is also an advocate for Aboriginal people and strives to build good working relationships with government bodies that would enable greater support for Aboriginal people in areas of family program services, Aboriginal youth resources, criminal justice services, and services specifically for Aboriginal mothers.
In addition to being a full-time student, Alissa is an avid volunteer and currently serves with the Aboriginal Steering Committee Meeting, the Federation of BC Youth in Care Network’s Local Development Program Action Team, and the First Nations Student Association. She is also a Peer Mentor for Indigenous students at SFU. Alissa sits on the Provincial Committee for the North American Indigenous Games for Badminton.
