Calling all education workers, school counselors, educational liaisons, parents, and caregivers! Do your students know the basics about applying to post-secondary education? We’re here to help! An education provides a path to a better future. Today, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students are pursuing educational opportunities that lead to careers in health, education, business and beyond – but that all starts with a post-secondary pathway plan and an application.
Whether you are working with Aboriginal students interested in college or in university, this interactive workshop will help you become familiar with the range of options available to help students start their applications to post-secondary education. Learn more about pathway programs such as Aboriginal Access Studies and the UBC-Langara Aboriginal Transfer Partnership. We’ll also share tips on what makes a successful application outside of academics and how to connect your students to grants, bursaries, and scholarships (and what the differences between all 3 are).

Tara Drage, Enrolment Services Professional and member of the Aboriginal Student Finances Team
Hi, I am Tara Drage, and I have been working at UBC for just over 5 years. As an Enrolment Services Professional, I support current and prospective students as a first point of contact to help develop financial strategies to cover post-secondary education expenses. Prior to this role, I worked as a Program Manager and Career Educator at UBC and I have spent several years of my career in the non-profit sector supporting children, youth and families in various capacities.
Chett Monague, Recruiter Advisor Aboriginal Students
Aaniin Boozhoo, Hello and Greetings, I am Chett Monague, I am from Beausoleil First Nation A.K.A. Chimnissing located on Georgian Bay in Ontario. I am new to the position of Recruiter Advisor Aboriginal Students with the University of British Columbia. In my role, I am responsible for outreach, advising and recruiting of Aboriginal learners from across Canada. Prior to my role with the university I worked with Aboriginal learners in elementary and high school grades with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.
Randy Grice, 4th Year Student, UBC Okanagan
Randy Grice, I am from the Cumberland House Cree Nation in Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba; however, I was raised here in the Okanagan. I am a fourth-year student at the UBC Okanagan campus, studying French and Spanish, and I intend to pursue a Bachelor of Education following graduation. I came to UBC Okanagan as a mature student through the Aboriginal Access Studies program, which has lead to some amazing opportunities, such as studying abroad for an entire year, as well as several employment and volunteer positions within the university itself. Alongside my studies, I currently work as a First-Year Peer Advisor in the Advising & Involvement Centre, as well as an Aboriginal Mentor in the Aboriginal Programs & Services Centre where it all started.
