In this UBC Learning Circle session Cease Wyss will introduce us to making teas from a variety of mixes of her special dried medicines & fresh medicines at Vij’s Kitchen. Cease owns and operates her online store Raven and Hummingbird Tea Co. in her traditional Coast Salish land in Vancouver. Some of the medicines she will be using as tea blends will be available and accessible throughout the Pacific Northwest Coast and some interior places.
T’uy’tanat (toy-stin-naut) Cease Wyss (Skwxwu7mesh) is a plant picker and grower and gatherer, and media maker.
She maintains a blog called Indigenous Plant Diva and makes her teas under Raven and Hummingbird Tea Company in her home territory Skwxwu7mesh. You can find her doing plant walks throughout the year in many places and also helps coordinate a community garden called “Harmony Garden” in Humulch’sen (Capilano Reserve).
Highlights of what Cease will cover in this session:
- the difference between an infusion and a concoction
- reviewing steeping, infusion and concoction times of tea
- drying and storing picked medicines
- preparing and mixing medicines for tea
- going over the shelf-life of teas and storage of medicines

T’Uy’Tanat-Cease Wyss
Skwxw’u7mesh/Sto:Lo/Hawaiian & Swiss Nations, Cease Wyss (A.k.a. Indigenous Plant Diva) is an Ethnobotanist, Media Artist, Educator and Activist. Cease has been building her long term relationship with all things plant-life for 40 years. She currently is the project coordinator for 2 community gardens. She is also the owner and operator of T’Uy’Tanat Teas. She continues to study and also teach medicinal plants with her community and programs within the City of Vancouver. Cease continuously promotes sharing knowledge and culture, with diverse communities in the unceeded territory of her people and beyond.
